What is SCADA?

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is a control system architecture used to monitor and control industrial processes across large geographic areas. SCADA systems collect real-time data from remote sensors and equipment, allowing operators to supervise and control processes from a central location.

Components

  • Remote Terminal Units (RTUs): Collect data from field devices
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs): Execute control logic
  • Human-Machine Interface (HMI): Provides operator visualization
  • Communication infrastructure: Connects distributed components
  • Master station: Central control and data processing

Security Concerns

SCADA systems were historically designed for reliability and availability rather than security. As these systems become increasingly connected to corporate networks and the internet, they face growing cyber threats that require dedicated OT security measures.

Regulatory Requirements

Critical infrastructure operators using SCADA systems are subject to various cybersecurity regulations, including IEC 62443 requirements for securing industrial automation systems.
